See the Penguins Come Marching Home

For close encounters of the bird (and animal) kind, Phillip Island is hard to beat.

Experience the twilight parade of the fairy penguins, observe the fur seals, shearwaters, koalas and other unique Australian fauna.

Phillip Island is close enough to Melboune for a daytrip by road. Return in the evening.

An interesting sidelight to the subject of fairy penguins is the attempt to rename them "little penguins" in the charged atmosphere of political correctness where "fairy" could connote something else. I think the term "fairy penguins" is miles more evocative of these land/sea creatures than the bland, bland, bland "little penguins."

When in Melbourne another daytrip to consider is heading west to the scenic, coastal Great Ocean Road and visiting the Twelve Apostles.

Hey, There's Hamilton Island

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is without doubt one of the country's most visited destinations, and the place new visitors to Australia plan to go to.

But the Reef is all of 2000 kilometres long stretching from the Torres Strait in the north all the way down to the south of the Tropic of Capricorn. So there's always the question of where to start and where to go.

There's Cairns, of course, the generally accepted gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. And you can go to Green Island from there.

And on the Tropic of Capricorn, there's Heron Island, another of Queensland's resort islands on the Reef.

In fact, there are quite a number of Queensland coastal towns which are jump-off points to the Reef, like Airlie Beach south of Bowen where you can catch a ferry to the Whitsunday Islands.

And, hey, there's Hamilton Island, one of the most acccessible resort islands in the Whitsunday group.

Walk Among the Canberra Flowers

Yes, it's that time of the year again when Canberra spreads a carpet of flowers to welcome you to Australia's national capital.

This year, Canberra's festival of the flowers, Floriade, is being held from September 11 to October 10 on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin.

The Floriade theme this year is Imagination and it will be interesting to see how this is translated into floral configurations.

If you're in Sydney, it's a leisurely half day's drive to Canberra through the Hume and Federal Highways. While there take time to visit Canberra's other attractions as well.

Launceston: Gateway to Tassie Heartland

It's one of Australia's oldest cities and a popular gateway to the heartland of the country's only island state, Tasmania. Fly from almost any major Australian airport or travel by sea from Melbourne and drive all the way to Cradle Mountain and other Tassie destinations.

Well, Well, Wellington

Some visitors to New Zealand tend to overlook the national capital, Wellington, since they think it's a bit out of the way, being in the south of the North Island away from the popular North Island tour routes. But wander into its wonderful world of the waka, weta and whare nui and you could see why New Zealand's second largest city ought to be a visitors' mecca.

Go Wild Among the Flowers: It's Festival Time in Perth

This year's month-long Wildflower Festival at Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, Western Australia, takes place from September 1.

When in the Western Australia capital, or within reasonable driving distance, you might want to visit Kings Park and walk among the flowers.

September 27 is, of course, the Queen's Birthday holiday in Western Australia so that gives holiday-makers a welcome long weekend, too.

Australia Gets a Hung Parliament

By midnight of the day of the Australian federal election, August 21, 2010, it was becoming clear that neither of the two major political parties — the Australian Labor Party led by Julia Gillard and the Liberal-National Party Coalition led by Tony Abbott — had won a clear majority in the House of Representatives.

In a 150-seat House of Representatives, 76 had to be won by a political party for that party to be able to form government but with one seat going to the Greens and three (possibly four) to independents — and the two major parties apparently assured of winning at least 72 seats each — it looked apparent that Australia would have a hung Parliament and one or the other of the major parties would have to form a minority or coalition government in alliance with several of the independents and, possibly, the winning Greens candidate.

The final election result may take days to be officially known with a large volume of absentee and postal votes yet to be received and tallied.

Is Spring the Best Time to Visit Sydney?

Spring is just around the corner. For many, the best time to visit Sydney is in the Australian spring (September 1-November 30) when the weather's great, it's a time of regrowth and, yes, romance is in the air.

Sail the harbour, take daytrips, go bushwalking, laze away life's cares on the city's white-sand beaches when the weather gets warmer.

Right from Wattle Day (September 1), it's not only Australia's national flower, the golden wattle, that colors the fields and gardens but a whole fresh variety of spring flowers. Check out the flower festivals, too.
